At its Gyproc factory in Brakpan, Gauteng, the company has launched a ‘Gypsum Recycling Service’ a first-of-its-kind offering that enables contractors and developers to divert gypsum waste from landfill at no recycling service fee. This bold move removes a critical cost barrier and sets a new benchmark for accessible circular construction in South Africa. The service allows gypsum offcuts and site waste to be collected and recycled, ensuring that valuable materials are recovered and reintroduced into the production cycle instead of being lost to landfill.
It’s a clear example of Saint-Gobain Africa’s Make it in Africa to Build Africa (MABA) commitment in action by delivering practical solutions built for local realities. Saint-Gobain Africa believes the transition towards circular construction will only take place through feasible solutions, collaboration and shared commitment.
“Gyproc’s Gypsum Recycling Service makes circular construction practical,” says Christo Smith, Managing Director for Walls and Ceilings at Saint-Gobain Africa. “With no recycling fee, we remove a major barrier to responsible waste management. We’re making it easier for contractors and developers to do the right thing without compromising commercial realities.” Unlike traditional disposal or composting solutions, the service is designed with real-world project conditions in mind, helping project teams reduce waste without adding cost or complexity.

The Gypsum Recycling Service represents a tangible step toward closing the loop in construction materials. However, the company emphasises that collaboration is critical.
